PANAMA CITY — An anonymous person from a Panamanian law firm, Mossack Fonseca, has leaked millions of documents describing how some of the world's richest hide money in offshore havens. PANAMA CITY — An anonymous person from a Panamanian law firm, Mossack Fonseca, has leaked millions of documents describing how some of the world's richest hide money in offshore havens. Although the spotlight is currently on Panama, tax havens like Panama exist all over the world. People use them to circumvent regulations that protect transparency, as well as to avoid paying taxes in their home countries. Shell companies are often established in cities and countries that have lax rules governing transparency and financial disclosure, or more lenient criminal laws. Using tax havens isn't always about paying less taxes. Wealth isn't necessarily kept within tax haven countries. Often such places only serve as addresses for shell companies, which exist solely on paper, and are created for as little as US$1,000, reported Vice in a 2014 article. On paper, these shell companies act as the intermediaries that own the wealth, whether that asset is a painting or a Swiss bank account. Because of the complex organizational structure of these shell companies, it's very difficult to figure out who a company actually belongs to. Setting up a shell company is not illegal and its existence is not always for a nefarious reason. A shell company may be established as a way to for one to save up funds to open a business. It may also act as a front for a project that a well-known company wants to keep from the public's eye until it's ready. According to Vox, Apple for example, may have created a shell company called SixtyEight Research as a front for a car project. However, these shells are often used as tax or legal loopholes, as setting up a shell company doesn't require much identification, which allows their ultimate owners to evade scrutiny. UC Berkeley economics professor Gabriel Zucman estimates that there is least US$7.6 trillion kept in offshore tax havens. However, due to the nature of tax havens, it's difficult to know for sure what the true amount is. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. While the disclosures have since led to the resignation of one world leader, Sigmundur Davio Gunnlaugsson, the Icelandic prime minister; the problem goes beyond mere individuals. The Panama Papers have exposed that most of the work Mossack Fonseca and the rest of the wealth-management industry do is perfectly legal. On this special edition of Counting the Cost, we take a closer look at tax havens and the legality behind them. Alex Cobham, a director of research at the Tax Justice Network, joins the programme to discuss the loopholes that allow tax-dodging. Stewart Patton, a US tax attorney based in Belize City, discusses the possible fallout for tax havens following the release of the Panama Papers. We also speak to James S Henry, a senior fellow at Columbia University's Center for Sustainable Investment, about the absence of American billionaires and companies on the leaked list and how the US, the world's biggest economy, is surprisingly a top tax haven. 8 Reasons for a Panama Offshore Bank Account http://blog.offshoreww.com/8-reasons-... 1. What is a Panama Offshore Bank Account? It is different than bank accounts in most other countries because Panama respects privacy so much that if bank officials give out information, they’ll be subjected to criminal charges. 2. Why do I need a Panama Offshore Bank Account? To protect your money before your government uses it to pay their own debt. Most Western governments are heavily in debt because they are squandering your taxes. 3. Why is Panama the best jurisdiction to keep my Offshore Bank Account? Most Banks in Panama are conservative in their approach, full of cash deposits and need no bail outs. Panamanians pay little or no taxes, keep their money to themselves and spend them shopping and having fun. 4. Why is Panama considered the New Switzerland? Historically, Panama has never betrayed their depositors by handing over their assets to foreign aggressors. Panama's economy goes far beyond just having banks since it has the Panama Canal and the resulting sustainable economic activity of moving most of the containers that travel the world. Business is Booming with a True Democracy that can’t be forced to sign any international deals that go against the interests of their own Citizens or the Foreign Residents who have been invited to live with them. 5. Why is Panama one of the finest Democracies in the World? Panama has 6 political parties for only 1.7 million voting Panamanians. They have an 80% voter turnout compared to 55% for the USA and 61% for Canada. Most voters have met their local Legislators in their offices, a Fiesta or some other kind of function. They also know where they live and where they send their kids to school. Real news travels fast because, from teens to grannies, they can all afford 100 dollars for a pretty good smart phone. With a phone data plan that only costs 15 dollars per month, Panamanians stay connected and are constantly communicating through WhatsApp and Facebook. They have converted the army into a police force where they all have friends and relatives. Whenever they get pushed around too much, they can react and be much more effective than most citizens of any ‘developed’ nations. 6. Why is Panama the Best Country to Establish an International Business? It’s the only Low Tax economy in the world that keeps on growing by leaps and bounds while all the rest fail. Panama is a shining example that Taxing people to a state of Poverty won’t work now, has never worked before and will never work in the future. Big Business is flocking into this Free nation that hosts the largest Banking center in Latin America where those with inside information are investing during the new Millennium. 7. Why Panama has no other choice than to remain the Most Ecologically Conscious country in the Planet? More than half the country is covered with wildlife. If Panamanians destroy their environment, they won’t have enough rain to operate their Canal. Should this ever happen, international shipping will stop and Panama’s economy will be destroyed. 8. Why does Panama have the Most Convenient and Cost Effective Residence Visas in the World? They don’t need to play political games with immigration. In Panama, you’re welcome if you want to work and have something to offer. If you have the funds to invest, you just have to make a real investment that will make money. If you have a network of connections, you can profit by helping them make things happen in ways that can't be done in other countries. If you want to retire in Panama, we make it even easier with discounts, exemptions and other bonuses. Become a Resident of Panama and have a lower tax status in your home country as long as you don’t stay there for more than 3 to 6 months a year depending on your country. You only have to visit Panama for a few days every two years to keep your resident status. A Panama Private Foundation is the combination of an offshore company & a offshore trust. The private foundation differs from an offshore company in that a foundation cannot engage directly in commercial business activity. The foundation has a founder, protector, beneficiary and council members, however there are no owners to a Panama Foundation. Foundation's regulations are kept private & confidential. A Panama Private Foundation: 1. Works like a private trust company. 2. Council members do not need a trust license. 3. It is registered in a governmental public registry. Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has set up a commission to investigate allegations made in the so-called Panama Papers that links his family to a series of offshore companies. Sharif made the announcement of a probe during a televised address to the nation on Tuesday. The Pakistani premier defended his family's business practices and denied any wrongdoing. On Monday, leaked documents from a Panama-based law firm showed that Sharif's daughter and two of his sons own several companies registered in the British Virgin Islands. The companies allegedly avoided paying taxes, disguised assets and their origins. Sharif and his family say the assets were gained legally through their business and industry networks in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Pakistani opposition groups accuse his family of accumulating the funds through corruption.
